There is a variety of Balinese wedding apparel styles. This variety depends on the region and one’s social standing. In early times wedding apparel for the noble (called payas agung and payas madya) differed from wedding apparel for the commoners (called payas nista). Likewise, wedding apparel of one regency differs from another one.
In line with the progress of development of the era, anyone is allowed to wear payas agung or payas madya wedding apparel that were once only worn by the king’s family members. Even today many bridal houses are creating new styles by modifying the existing Balinese wedding apparel. Balinese wedding apparel is very rich in symbols, philosophy, and aesthetic values in every form and colour. For instance the golden-coloured hairpieces are beauty symbols, the white and yellow cempaka (the champac) flowers, and the sandat (the ylang-ylang) flowers symbolize the Hindu gods Brahma, Wisnu and Siwa. The red gecek on the bride’s forehead symbolizes purity, while the dagger and its sheath is tucked on the back or waist of the bridegroom for a courageous and handsome appearance symbolizing the unity of a man and a woman. The golden rays dominating the traditional Balinese wedding apparel will make you look elegant and exotic. You may wear this apparel for Hindu or Protestant weddings.
 
Balinese Blessing Experience
This is a series of a very interesting purification ceremony with a procession to call on the bride by the bridegroom to go to the place of ceremony. It is then followed by a natab ceremony, i.e. a holy water ceremony provided by the pemangku or priest to cleanse the bride and bridegroom before entering a new life. The procession proceeds with a metanjung sambuk ritual (to step over the offerings and coconut fibres) and to pray with the aim to beseech for safety, health, happiness and a bright future for the newlyweds. Each step of the ceremony is full of meanings and symbols.
