As part of the Republic of Indonesia, the laws of the Republic of Indonesia are applicable to weddings on the Island of Bali.

Weddings in Indonesia are commonly categorized into two stages, i.e. weddings according to the religious rituals (of five religions acknowledged by the country namely:  Islam, Christianity, Catholic, Hinduism, Buddhism and some particular beliefs) followed by legal weddings by the Civil Registry or the Religious Affairs Office for Moslems.  Religious weddings are usually conducted without a legalization, conversely a legal wedding cannot be conducted without a religious wedding beforehand.  The registration of a wedding is commonly conducted by going to the Civil Registry / Religious Affairs Office or you can invite officers of the Civil Registry / Religious Affairs Office to the wedding site at additional charges.

Foreign nationals may also conduct their weddings in Indonesia, both the religious and legal ones.  Pertinent documents required for both stages are a certification that you are not bound in wedlock issued by the Consular Office of your country.  In order to obtain such Letter of No Impediment you should complete and sign an application form from the respective consulates and to submit several documents such as:

  1. Photocopy of passport
  2. Photocopy of Decree absolute if divorced
  3. Photocopy of Documentary evidence of any change of name
  4. Photocopy of Birth certificate

The required documents from the respective consulates are usually slightly different with one another depending to the policies of the relevant countries.

If you are a foreign national going to marry an Indonesia Citizen, a Letter of  No Impediment from your country/Consulate is still required, while four your Indonesian partner the following documents are required:

  1. Letter of No Impediment from the Neighbourhood Chief
  2. Photocopy of Resident Identity Card
  3. Photocopy of Birth Certificate
  4. Different documents commonly required according to the adopted faith and condition of  bride-to-be

Should you be desirous to register your wedding legally in Indonesia, you would need two witnesses over 18 yeas of age.  The presence of these witnesses is also mandatory in particular religious weddings.  Witnesses may be your friends or relatives (no siblings, children or parents), or witnesses provided by our office.  The witnesses must submit photocopies of their respective passports or copies of their Resident Identity Cards for Indonesian witnesses.

We are also willing to assist you in arranging for such documents, both at the consulate, the religious institutions as well as the civil registry.  You only need to inform your nationality and your faith as well as the place and time of your wedding (see guest book).  We will correspond with you regarding the requirements that you need.  We are pleased to let you know that there are no charges to answer your queries and without any obligations whatsoever.
